The following are descriptions of awards students may earn in the course of their study. The ribbons, medals and trophies, presented at the semi-annual recitals, are given in recognition of achievement; they are not won competitively, nor are they given simply for participation.
Students are given ratings at their weekly lessons, reflecting the quality of their work and progress made from one week to the next. First and Second Place ribbons are then awarded at the semi-annual recitals, based on the overall practice ratings.
The purpose of this award is to enable students to develop into confident, poised performers. By playing frequently for small, familiar, friendly audiences (immediate and extended family, peers and friends) they learn to manage the jitters that are an inevitable part of performing and become willing, rather than reluctant performers.
When we play a securely memorized
piece of music we are better able to give our undivided attention to listening
to our playing and to the musical effect we are creating.
To earn a memorization award students
learn and memorize five selections.
The objective of the Listening program is to acquaint students with some of the great music that has stood the test of time. Most accomplished musicians in all genres of music have a strong background in the classical music tradition.
Twenty points are required to earn a Listening Award. All CDs and videos in Mrs. Winner’s lending library are marked with their “point” value. Listening points may additionally be earned by listening to students' own Classical CDs, attending live performances featuring Classical music and listening to Classical Music radio stations: WETA (90.9 F.M) and WBJC (91.5 F.M.) or internet audio sites such as "Pristine Classical" and "Pandora.
Students are presented with ribbons for completing a level of music theory (This includes knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, rhythm, intervals, chords, pentachords, scales, symbols, terms, transposition and ear training.)
The objective of the sight reading program is to develop skills to enable students to "tackle" new pieces of music with ease and confidence. Students earn ribbons, trophies and plaques for completing 25, 50, 75 (and more) books of sight reading pieces.
Innumerable skills must be mastered in the course of a musician's training. Students earn PIANOlympics gold medals by mastering a minimum of eight skills in the PIANOlympics program.
